"The LORD, He is God"

The talks this year are based on 1 Kings chapters 17-19 with the overriding title of "The LORD, He is God!" Charlotte Cornes, see details below, is our main speaker.

Where is God when his people turn away? How do we trust him when we face disappointments, and when our own hearts feel divided? This year’s conference will lead us into the story of Elijah in 1 Kings 17-19, as Charlotte Cornes unpacks the call to wholehearted faith in the living, life-giving God. Together, we’ll explore the power of prayer, the challenge of rejecting idols, and the unshakable promise of God’s word to sustain us. Come along, and be encouraged to proclaim, “The Lord - He is God!”(1 Kings 18:39)

The talks will be recorded and be available on the CWBS YouTube channel as audios afterwards, and in the booklet you'll also find small group questions that can be used after the conference should people like to meet up and discuss the talks further.

The day will include talks by Charlotte Cornes and a seminar of your choice.

If you would like to attend but don’t have the means, please ask your church leader to contact us at cwbconf@gmail.com.

Seminar options

Seminar 1: "A GP's perspective on gender and identity" with Kate Townsend

Kate will provide an overview of different types of gender dysphoria that have gripped our society so quickly. She will look at medical treatment, its long term impact, the knowns and unknowns and the available evidence. She will provide a Biblical perspective and consider how we walk with those affected by this.

Kate is a medical doctor. She works as a GP (General Practitioner) in Cambridge where many of the patients are University students. Her interest in gender dysphoria first arose in 2014 when there was a large and sudden surge in the number of ‘gender-questioning’ patients presenting at her medical practice seeking medical and/or surgical interventions to ‘transition’. She has written and led seminars on care of transgender patients for the Christian Medical Fellowship. She is married to Christopher and they have three adult children.

Seminar 2: "The power and promise of God in reaching the world" with Josephine B.

From God's promise to Abraham, to Jesus' instruction to make disciples of all nations, the Lord's kingdom plans are for the whole world. Hear personal stories of how He is at work in difficult places, and be encouraged and challenged about your role in bringing God's powerful word to people from all over the world.

Jo has spent over a decade living in the Far East where she was involved in evangelism and discipleship of women. She has two children and is part of Grace Church, Cambridge where her husband serves as a pastor for internationals.

Seminar 3: My loved one is depressed – how can I help? with Katherine Price

In this seminar we’ll be thinking about how we can walk alongside those we might know and love who are struggling with low mood or depression. When Elijah felt so low, God ministered to him in body and soul, and so we’ll be learning how we too can minister to our loved ones in body and soul, not as experts, but as friends who love them and love Jesus. It’s more than likely that some of us at the conference will be struggling personally in this way, and hopefully this seminar will still be helpful, but the emphasis will be on helping others.

Katherine is a local vicar’s wife and mum to 3 fabulous daughters who are all now taller than her. She’s loved being involved in various kinds of pastoral ministry at St Matthews church for the last 16 years. She works part time as a TA which she also loves, but also wonders if she’s getting too old for! She became interested in biblical counselling when people started coming to her for help and she didn’t have a clue where to start. She’s still very relieved that her job isn’t to fix people but to love them and keep pointing them to Jesus..

Seminar 4: Reading the Bible to enjoy God with Sarah Gibson

We know we should read God’s word. But it can sometimes be hard to know where to start. And, even if we’ve been reading the Bible for years, we can lack motivation or get stuck in a rut. In this seminar, we’ll consider how to approach the Bible in a way that fixes our eyes on God and keeps us delighting in him in the long term.

Sarah is on the pastoral staff at St Andrew the Great Church, Cambridge, with particular responsibility for students. She loves seeing what God does when we open up his word together. Sarah worked for a while as a primary school teacher and then discipling women at a church in London. She is married to Douglas and enjoys time with family, meals with friends and being part of a running group (mainly for the social side!)

Main Speaker

Charlotte Cornes will be our main speaker at this year's conference. Charlotte lives in New Barnet in North London, where she has been the Women’s Worker at Lyonsdown Church for the last fifteen years. Her work involves outreach in the community, as well as discipling women in the church family and training them as partners in gospel ministry.

Given the multi-national London context, much of this work is with women who have English as a second language. She loves going for long walks, playing in a swing band, and any kind of dancing.
