"Black Comics Matter" will teach aspiring creators of color the basics of creating comics and character design, the history of Black representation in comics and cartoons and methods for channeling the Black experience through story and metaphor.
All guest instructors will be Black artists and creators of all representations working in the industry hosted by Cartoon Art Museum Instructor Greg McCrary. Their focus will be giving you the tools necessary to start you on the path of being a successful artist and helping you find your voice as a minority in the comic world.

How do I join the online workshop?
You can use any computer, tablet or mobile device with any browser to access the online workshop which will be run through a video chat service. The service is only reviled to those who sign up for increased security for your family.
How do I get the link?
RSVP for free and the link will be sent to the email you signed up with the day before the workshop. We also send detailed instructions on how to use the link from different devices.
Do I need to download anything for the video chat?
No. The service we use runs in your browser so there is nothing to download or install. Just click the link and you'll go right to the workshop!
Can I attend if I'm not in the Bay Area or the West Coast?
YES! You can attend from anywhere you have an internet connection. Remember that all times listed are in the Pacific Time Zone and adjust accordingly. Here's a link to a handy tool to make that calculation!
Greg McCrary
Greg grew up with a creative hand, inspired by Cartoon Network favorites Samurai Jack and Dexter’s Laboratory, all imagined by his artist idol, Genndy Tartakovsky. Greg committed himself to turning his passion for illustrating into a career. He received training as a caricature artist at Six Flags. He self published "Laser Dog" and did design, illustration and lettering for Ink and Drink Comics, Grayhaven Comics, Stache Publishing, and Image Comics. In 2015 his work was featured in the Maurice Sendak Gallery at the St. Louis Public Library and was featured on the cover of the River Front Times in 2016. Greg was also an Emerging Artist at the Foundry featuring "Hipster Pets". Greg currently freelances Illustration and Comics with clients across the country. His current comic, HamletMania, can be found on Webtoons.
Louis Stokes is an aspiring comic book artist/writer and a preschool teacher who previously taught art classes at community centers. Stokes’ comic "Lightning" tells the story of a character based on his younger self who is growing up without a father while learning the meaning of being a superhero in a world already overpopulated by superheroes. Stokes’ comic "Star Knight" is about a boy and an alien becoming best friends and constantly fending off interstellar threats. You can find Stokes work on Instagram @lightninglouis85.
Kristofor Harris is a Kansas City based freelance illustrator and painter. His passions include Art, Comic Books, Movies and books. Projects include: Respite, Cocaine Pet Shop, Ted the Demon and his work can also be seen in numerous published anthologies.

This workshop will focus on Mythology in Black cultures from all over the world and their use and interpretations in comics.
Adrian "Age" Scott, Raptoonist is the creator of the hip hop comic book "Won and Phil, The HipHop Heroes''. He also has written and illustrated several other comics and children's books that all incorporate hip hop in his art. He will teach hip hop in comic books and show how hiphop isnt just a musical tool but a literary one also.
In the class, we will address the comics that have used hip hop before and the ones planning on using it and the similarities hip hop and comic books both have. The class will also have basic cartooning skills offered also. Please come it will be fun!
Danyel Poindexter "The Sarcastic Artist" and Dee "AND SO I ILLUSTRATE" are two young up and coming brilliant black creators figuring it all out in the digital age and eager to share their experiences. Delores is an art vlogger on YouTube and Dee is a Digital Illustrator and a Queer Storyteller sharing work primarily through Instagram & Twitter. Both tackle what it means to be a black artist, having work that is "black" enough, and how their art has influenced their mental health.
